Cast Away..."What Will The Tide Bring In?"

One of my favorite inspirational movie scenes is from the movie “Castaway” with Tom Hanks.  Towards the end of the movie, there is a scene where after he returns home from his 4 -year ordeal on a deserted south pacific island he is talking to his friend about how he had lost all hope.  In the scene, he says to his friend; “I knew I had to keep breathing…because tomorrow the sun would rise and who knows what the tide will bring in?”   If you’ve seen the movie you know that the tide did bring in exactly what he needed which gave him new hope and eventually led to his rescue.

You might be asking what this has to do with your health.   Many practice members have heard me say at one time or another “If you’re still breathing, you have an opportunity to change”.  By just changing the words we speak we can change our perspective and therefore influence our future.  The words we speak are powerful agents of change that can affect our self-image.  And as our self-image improves, the changes and goals we have are much easier to accomplish.   In addition, when we focus on the life we want to have and not the one to avoid; opportunities begin to surface to help us achieve those goals we have.

If you want this year2024 to be the year you actually complete your New Year’s resolutions made long ago; you must first begin to change what you speak to yourself every day.  Have you ever heard someone say “I feel so tired today”, or “I just can’t seem to lose any weight no matter what I do”?   You will draw into your life what you speak to yourself every day.  If instead, you use words of hope, faith, and possibility; you will

draw those into your life.  Changes you want may not appear immediately but over time the inside change will reflect on the outside.

A great example of this is reflected in the famous book and movie by noted journalist and professor Norman Cousins.  In his book ”Anatomy of an Illness”; he describes a treatment for his own arthritic illness which doctors gave him little chance of surviving.  Cousins developed a recovery program incorporating mega doses of Vitamin C, along with a positive attitude, affirmations, love, faith, hope, and laughter induced by Marx Brothers films. "I made the joyous discovery that ten minutes of genuine belly laughter had an anesthetic effect and would give me at least two hours of pain-free sleep," he reported. "When the pain-killing effect of the laughter wore off, we would switch on the motion picture projector again, and not infrequently, it would lead to another pain-free interval."

This year 2024 focus on the health you want to have and not the health to avoid.   Draw into your life choices which can help you become the healthy person you were meant to be.  And keep breathing…because tomorrow the sun will rise, and who knows what the tide will bring in!!
