Chirothots Dogs, Mirrors, and Tennis

Dogs, Mirrors, and Tennis

By Steven Key D.C., C.C.S.P.

A few years ago my wife and I were taking a walk at Ed Levin Park by Milpitas, California. We had our dog Kea with us, a spoiled white German Shepherd (what else would you expect?). Kea seemed to be constantly pulling on her leash, forcing us to walk backward occasionally. Immediately, I realized that it was very difficult to move forwards when we were constantly being pulled backward. I started to think about how many things in life seemingly force us to do the same thing; especially when we spend too much time rehearsing our past failures. How can we move forward when we are being pulled backward?

Think about when you’re driving a car. To get where you need to go while driving; you have to look through a big front windshield which gives you the greatest field of vision. You also have a rearview mirror, which allows you to look behind you, but it has a much smaller field of vision. Sometimes you do have to look behind for safety reasons, but, if you spend too much time looking behind you, you wouldn’t see what is in front of you and you would probably crash. The same is true as we go through life. If we spend too much time thinking and dwelling on things in our life that haven’t worked out in our past; we will miss the opportunities for moving toward our future. There are limitless possibilities in our futures, but none exist in our past.

Another interesting example I learned of the other day has to do with one of the Australian Opens, which is played around this time of year in Australia. A few years ago during one of the intermissions from play, the American commentator asked the Australian commentator about the Australian crest which you see below.  He said: “What are those two animals on the crest and why are they facing each other?”

The Australian commentator said: “That Is a vital part of our crest. The two animals you see are the Red Kangaroo on the left and the Emu on the right, both native to Australia. The two animals represent the different states of Australia. The two animals face the states of Australia to represent that Australia will always be looking forward to the future without regrets about the past”. Maybe this will be the year that you don’t live in the past and look forward to the future. This idea is expressed perfectly in one of my favorite books The Power of Now by Ekhart Tolle. In the book, Eckart states that most people have a fear of the future or live in the past and never really experience the now or the present. I encourage you to make next year, 2024, the year that you wake up and begin to move towards all that you can be mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually. It’s been said that every journey starts with a single step, so I encourage you to put your foot on the gas and never look back! Happy 2024!   Ke Akua Puu!
